Fesco to build container terminal on key INSTC node
Russian transport giant Fesco will build a container terminal in the Ashtrakan region, an area of Russia that borders Kazakhstan and the Caspian Sea. The location is relevant for the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) since the corridor’s Western and Central routes meet in Astrakhan.
The region is also the destination of the Trans-Caspian Route, crossing the Caspian Sea from Tehran. The intention of building the terminal was made public this week when Andrey Severilov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Fesco, met with the Governor of the Astrakhan Region, Igor Babushkin.
Not only Fesco investing in terminals along the INSTC
Fesco is not the only Russian company that plans on boosting traffic along the INSTC. In June, Russian Railways said it would improve the terminal in Volzhsky, in the Volgograd region, north of Astrakhan. Other than being one of the central axes of the INSTC, Volgograd is also the meeting point of the main rail line with the Russia-Georgia-Armenia Road Route.
